For online business owners it is important to understand the basics as to how search engines work. This enables you, as an online business owner, to take advantage of the traffic that only search engines can deliver to your website.

Search engines like Google and Yahoo may play a large part in the success or failure of your online business. All though most Internet users have experience using search engines, many of them simply don’t know how they work.

Search Engines are special sites on the internet that are essentially designed to help people find information that is stored on other websites. There are many differences in the way that various Search Engines work, but they all perform three basic tasks:

- Search the Internet or select pieces of the Internet based on important words,

- Keep an index of the words they find, and where they find them, and

- Allow users to look for words or combination’s of words which are found in that index.

Initially Search Engines consisted of an index that was made up of a few hundred thousand documents and different website pages. Back then, they may have only received around one or two thousand inquiries each day. Today, a top Search Engine will effortlessly index hundreds of millions of pages, and easily responds to tens of millions of search queries a day.

Before a Search Engine can tell you where a file or document is, it must first be able to find it. To find information that is located within the hundreds of millions of Web pages that exist today, a Search Engine employs special software robots, called spiders. Theses spiders build lists of the words found on Web sites.

When a spider is building its lists, this process is called web crawling.
