Factors To Consider When Choosing Your Domain Name

The domain name you decide upon for your business is just as important as choosing your business name. It is an vital  part of building up your web presence on the internet. You need to be very careful when choosing your domain name as it can mean the difference between getting traffic to your site and getting ignored.

There are some important factors that you need to take into consideration when figuring out what you are going to name your website. I have come up with a short guide below, to help you in choosing your domain name.

  • The domain name you are going to use for your online business should be relative to the nature of your business. If your business was about perfume you wouldn’t have a name that is relative to mattresses. Your aim is to associate your domain name with the nature of your business so that it sticks in your customers mind. If your business was about books, then having the word “books” in your domain name would be appropriate.

  • You should first think about using your business name as your domain name. If your business name is too long or confusing then you could shorten it but be certain to use a name that describes your company. You need to make it easy for visitors to remember your name, and be able to find you when they need to.

  • Avoid including hyphens in your domain name, as they are difficult to remember. Plus if you are setting up your online business to one day sell, a domain name that has no hyphen in it has a higher resale dollar value than one that has a hyphen.

  • Numbers can be used if it makes your domain name easy for your visitors to remember. One thing not to do if possible is use numbers phonetically. This can make it confusing for people. For example, using the number “two” to replace the word “too” can result in someone typing on the wrong name.

  • Never register a domain name that infringes a trademark. Only the owner of a trademark should do this, simply for that fact that it can result in expensive legal battles. This is one thing to stay away from.

  • A domain name that is made up of three to six characters are more memorable than very long ones. A short name can make it easier for people to remember you and much quicker to type. It can also make it much easier for people to find you. If your domain name is too long then you are taking the risk of someone spelling it incorrectly, not to mention forgetting it as well. The worst thing that could happen would be someone typing in the wrong name and ending up at your competitors website instead of yours.

Essentially keep it simple. Don’t confuse people. Try to choose a name that is short and easy to remember. Put yourself in your customers place when they are trying to reach your site. Will it be easy to type? Can you spell your domain name to someone over the phone without much difficulty or having to repeat yourself?

This is going to be the start of your presence in the internet from now on, so make sure you do your research and choose wisely. Never rush into it.
