If you have previously worked in an administrative or clerical field of work and can offer support to business clients from your own office, then starting up as a Virtual Assistant could be the perfect work at home opportunity for you. A virtual assistant is an independent contractor who provides administrative support to clients from their virtual office.

Setting up your virtual assistant business only takes a few simple steps. One of the most important things you will need to do is some research into setting up your own business. You will need to find out what legal and taxation obligations you have in your state and country. It can also be helpful in obtaining jobs and clients when starting out new. Before signing up for any course make sure you do your background checks and investigate the agency or company. You could also get advice from other virtual assistants and even look at finding a mentor to help you get started.

The next step is setting up your own home office area then onto your virtual office. You will need to set up a website as your main area to advertise your virtual assistant services to the world. A website is a necessity to establishing you presence online. If you don’t know how to set up a website you could contact other virtual assistants who offer web site design services or find someone else who can do this for you. This is one thing that you would learn how to do if undertaking a virtual assistant course.

So what do you put on your website? It is essential to explain to your potential clients who you are and what services you provide. Make sure that you only offer services that you want to provide. Do not offer something that you can’t do or don’t really like doing. If you have a special skill set or background in a specific field of work for example Web Design, you could list this as a special service that you provide. This is the best thing about being a virtual assistant - at the end of the day you get to decide what services and tasks you want to perform and provide.

Next you need to start getting clients. The best method to get your first project or client is to start with networking. Let people you know that you have started up your business. Even let previous employers know about the services you are providing. Always make sure that you have current contact information on your website including a phone number or email address. Remember to promote your website to everyone you know.
