Basics of Viral Marketing

If you are trying to sell a product or service online and not having much luck then you need to look at viral marketing.  This is one of the best ways to sell your products and in turn make a lot of sales.

You may wonder how can this be so?  Well, because of the way that viral marketing works, you don’t necessarily need to have a big list or a big spending budget for an advertising campaign, but by putting viral marketing into place, can greatly impact your business.

So what is viral marketing?  According to Wikipedia:

“Viral Marketing refers to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce an increases in brand awareness, through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet. Viral marketing is a marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message voluntarily. Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, images, or even text messages.”

Are you confused by this?  Ok to break it down into simple plain English, viral marketing basically is a way of getting a bundle of people to tell other people about something which you have created and to build a buzz about your product and/or service.  Bu passing it around to other’s, this builds social proof as there is a kind of understood endorsement when you send something to another person.  You will sometimes get lucky and the more it gets passed around, the more it takes on a life of its own.

A perfect example of viral marketing is the “Free Hugs” video that is on YouTube.  This video has been viewed by millions of people, along with the music that was on the video (this was a song written by a group called the “Sick Puppies”.  The video was responsible for launching the Sick Puppies career – even though this was not their original intent.  That video – and the story behind it went viral and captured the attention and the hearts of people worldwide.   It even bred a movement that is still going on today.

Now you might not be able to pull off a viral marketing campaign that does as well as the “Free Hugs” video, but if you are prepared to spend some time to research your market along with your target audience, and can think outside the box, then you can create a very successful viral marketing campaign of your very own.

So what sort of things can go viral?  Obviously videos.  (As a matter of fact, if you look at most of the big “gurus” in the Internet Marketing field today, you’ll discover that they are all heavily utilising videos to promote their launches and produce marketing  campaigns that go viral.  Nevertheless, if you don’t have the desire or confidence to produce a video, then you can go with that old standby – the “Special Report.”   Podcasts, white papers and even case studies all have the power to “go viral”, capture peoples attention and in turn get a lot of people very interested in what you have to say – and sell.

To produce a successful viral marketing campaign, it’s very crucial that you find the right blend of media, marketing and audience.  Be sure that your target audience is going to be interested in what you have to say, the way you’re saying it and how you’re bringing it to their attention.  If you get these three things correct, then the chances are, you’ll have a winner on your hands, and your next marketing campaign will go viral too.
